BUS 9700 – Sustainable Business: Perspectives, Theories, and Practices
3 hours; 3 credits
This course has been designed to provide students with an introduction to the theory and practice of sustainable business. It is the principal required course in the Sustainable Business major at the MBA level. The course seeks to enable students to develop a deep understanding of the concept of sustainability; its importance, its application to business; and its economic, social and environment implications. The role of government and NGOs in sustainable development will be explored vis-a-vis their relationship to business. Ethics and its role in sustainability will be featured throughout the course.

MGT 9740 – Sustainability in Supply Chains and Operations
3 hours; 3 credits
The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of environmental and social sustainability issues in managing global and domestic supply chains. It will introduce the students—through a series of case studies, projects, and guest lectures from industry leaders—to the most important concepts of sustainability within the end-to-end supply chain. Students will investigate building an operations strategy for sustainability, the economic value of sustainable operations, sustainable product design/packaging/ manufacturing, managing a sustainable supply chain, social responsibility in the supply chain, building a “green” information technologies infrastructure to support operations, green logistics and reverse logistics, and modern standards for measuring and certifying sustainable operations.

CIS 9240 – Sustainability and IT
3 hours; 3 credits
This course examines the relationship between Information Technology and sustainability. Students will be introduced to different theories and practices pertaining to business, Information Technology, and sustainability. The course examines both “greening of IT” and “greening by IT.” Greening of IT refers to the impact of information systems on the environment, including challenges such as the carbon footprint of information systems and ewaste. Greening by IT refers to IT-enabled solutions that focus on reducing green-house gas emissions.
Prerequisite: CIS 9000 or CIS 9001.

MKT 9752 – Sustainable Marketing
3 hours; 3 credits
This course explores the marketing-related issues, problems and opportunities created by the changing physical environment and the challenges to the sustainability of life as we know it. A combination of lectures, talks by specialist guests, field work and readings is used to examine various aspects of the topic. The coverage will be broad, ranging from ethical concerns to the relationship of green markets to international trade patterns. Students will execute both individual and group projects in the course of learning how to apply this knowledge to practical marketing tasks such as market analysis, new product development, and product management.

PAF 9143 – Greening and Growing Cities: Sustainability and Public Policy Choices
3 hours; 3 credits
The course focuses on the theory and practice of urban sustainability policies and programs. It addresses public policies as they helped shape the growth and uses of urban land within 20th and 21st century cities in the United States, within context of supporting or contesting long-term sustainable practices. The concentration will be on the historical evolution of land uses in New York as they affect the overall sustainability of its communities and economy.
