The Science Barge greenhouse, floating on the Hudson River, grows an abundance of fresh produce including tomatoes, melons, greens, and lettuce with zero net carbon emissions, zero pesticides, and zero runoff.
All of the energy needed to power the Barge is generated by solar panels, wind turbines, and biofuels while the hydroponic greenhouse is irrigated solely by collected rainwater and purified river water, thus operating completely “off the grid.”
It is the only fully functioning demonstration of renewable energy supporting sustainable food production in New York. It is docked in downtown Yonkers just north of the Yonkers Pier.

The Crossover Between Corporate and Social Ventures
- On Tuesday, October 19th, the Sustainable Business Club and the Zicklin Women in Business club hosted four distinguished speakers for the above panel event. The speakers
- discussed the similarities and differences between for-profit corporate businesses and for-profit and nonprofit, mission-driven businesses. They noted that the skills and knowledge gained from an MBA education are essential in all business organizations, whether they are shareholder or stakeholder driven. The panelists also clarified the point that corporate and social sectors are not as separated as they may seem, and can actually benefit from interacting and learning from each other, and that there is ample opportunity for MBA students to facilitate this process. The speakers generously agreed to share their contact information for any students who would like to be in touch on this topic. Thanks to all who attended the event!
- The names and contact information of the panelists are as follows: Christina Dellisanti-Miller christina@athenacollaborative.org, Michelle Pullaro mpullaro@gmail.com, Jonah Zimiles – jonah.zimiles@gmail.

Boardroom Secrets: Corporate Governance for Quality of Life describes how the global economic crisis is above all else, a corporate governance crisis. Recent high-profile corporate failures have clearly demonstrated that good governance is the key to the sustainability of the corporation. Good governance is a lot more than compliance. It is a culture and a climate of consistency, responsibility, accountability, fairness, transparency, and effectiveness that are developed throughout the organization (CRAFTED principles of governance).
